Vietnam Mission Trip  September 2005

Joann Tran and Elizabeth Wiles travelled to Vietnam, Thailand, and Kenya during our mid-year break.  Joann writes about her time in Vietnam...

I praise God for this Vietnam Mission trip.  Before the mission trip God helped me to be prepared during the process.  He brought me to a few Vietnamese Christian friends to help me touch up with my language skills especially speaking in Vietnamese regularly…  I’m amazed for God’s perfect plan and indeed He worked in His mysterious ways.  He enlarged my heart and deepened my compassion to share the gospel to the people in Vietnam.

My purpose for the mission trip was to train and equip the new believers in Vietnam through Peter Truong’s “Everyday Evangelism” manual and to win 4 souls.  Praise God 4 souls came to know the Lord!

1st convert was a 22 year-old Vietnamese girl name Ngan.  A few days later God answered her prayer, and she was accepted to study in Tokyo.  She was also introduced to Mr Quek Ho’s relative in Japan during her stay next year.  This is so wonderful!

2nd convert were visiting my relative in the countryside .  Praise God!  My aunty gave her life to the Lord on the second day of our visit.

3rd convert were a Chinese man who owns a Chinese restaurant - he shared his long search for his lost family.  He was separated from his family for 30 years.  During my lunch visit, God reminded me again.  God’s love became so evident, I could see in this man’s eyes that he really wanted to see his children and wife.  Currently, he told me that his family is living in Sydney.  I try to investigate his family in Sydney for all sorts of database and connection I can get for him.

God’s presence was strongly touching his heart as I shared to him the good news.  He responded immediately and made that decision to pray the sinner’s prayer.  He saw my tears and compassioned and was touched.  Later on he asked me to be his adopted daughter.  Together we celebrated our father and daughter’s celebration on the night and surprisedly he gave me a beautiful jade cross as a memorable gift.

4th convert, I thought I was running out of time and praise God, He answered my prayers!  He is so faithful.  Nghia Luong, a 25 year old Vietnamese guy who came from a rich family.  He didn’t know God personally.  Later on he gave his life to the Lord -just two hours before we were on our way to the airport to Hanoi.

There were so many opportunities to share the good news but it was limited of time as we were heading to Kenya and Thailand.

I thank God for his open door in this mission trip!  Elizabeth and I were so blessed to be offered a free 5-star hotel in Vietnam by Mr Quek Ho.  God blessed us with so many great connections towards networking contacts from Asia to Africa.  I thank God for building me a great friendship with the brothers and sisters in Hope Church Singapore! Indeed, it was definitely a fruitful time doing God’s work!

I would like to encourage friends, brothers and sisters who are reading my testimony is to be strong, bold and courageous to go out there and evangelise!  God is always there!  He is so real!  The Lord shows me through my dream this scripture - reflect on Joshua 10:25-26....

Quotes from students

"Theology, doctrine, knowledge, Christian education, etc, are to serve the development of our relationship with God, and not vice versa" - John Bomford

"Every time I serve, I see it as a thanksgiving to God" - Elaine Ho

Feedback from Ros (Merrylands Baptist Church)

This is just a quick thank-you note to both you and Wayne Botting (Wayne taught the bulk of the Apologetics Unit in 2003).  You may not remember this, Wayne, but you gave me some feedback after I presented a devotion at the Apologetics MDC course last year, about my eye contact during the devotion.  I was pleased at the time that you did, as I had been completely unaware of this habit.

Recently God has reminded me of your observation.  He has gently revealed to me even more.  Poor eye contact has been a barrier in many of my social interactions, not just in front of groups.  I want to thank you and Brian for encouraging the “speak the truth” in love principle.  If you had not done so, I may still be oblivious to this habit, which may have been affecting my witness.
