Youth off the Streets

Youth Off The Streets supports young Australians as they work to turn their lives around. It is our goal that these young people will leave our care drug free, with a high school education, living skills and a full or part time job in hand. Based on the philosophy that every young person has greatness within, these programs are non-denominational and non-discriminatory.

STAY OFF THE STREETS

By Monica Heary (Parramatta Sun 9/05)

Mentor money: Sussan Ley and Father Chris Riley at Merrylands.

The Youth Off The Streets program at Merrylands has received additional funding.  MP Sussan Ley, Parliamentary Secretary for Children and Youth Affairs, announced the additional funding for the program at an open day.  The Department of Family and Community Services is to provide $120,000 each year for four years of mentoring, one of the services that the not-for-profit program organisation provides.

Father Chris Riley, CEO and founder of Youth Off The Streets, said the grant showed the Government's recognition of the importance of mentoring to create long-term positive results for disadvantaged youth.  The Catholic priest said the money would mean the program would continue to lead the way in developing mentoring with a great impact on the social, emotional and practical development of youth at risk.  Father Riley has worked with disadvantaged youth for more than 30 years and believes early intervention can help them keep control of their lives.

The recent open day featured tours of three programs.  They were Chapel School, which provides a "time out" support initiative to students at risk of being excluded from mainstream school, the Dunlea drug-and-alcohol program, and McIntosh House which has a semi-independent living program.

Youth Off the Streets works for the disadvantaged, homelessness, addiction and abuse.  The organisation provides valuable services to youth such as supported accommodation, counselling;  detoxification, education, outreach and supported residential facilities that help young people to re-establish themselves:
